Trump Defends Russian Oligarch’s Role in Son’s Wedding Celebration
President says Donald Trump Jr. is repaying a Putin-linked Russian businessman who reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on wedding festivities
President Donald Trump is defending an arrangement in which a Russian businessman with close ties to Vladimir Putin helped finance celebrations surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding, saying the arrangement was permitted and that his son was paying the money back.
The controversy centers on Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association and a businessman who has maintained close ties to the Russian government.
Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson were married in the Bahamas in May 2026. According to reporting first published by ProPublica and subsequently confirmed in part by the couple, Kremlev helped pay for celebrations held after their private wedding ceremony.
The expenses reportedly included the rental of a private island and a fireworks display, with ProPublica estimating that Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs.
Bettina Trump later acknowledged Kremlev’s involvement publicly, describing him as a close friend who hosted two nights of celebrations for the newlyweds.
The couple has emphasized that their actual wedding ceremony was a separate, private event attended only by family. They said the larger gathering with friends had already been planned and that Kremlev’s contribution should be viewed as a generous gift from a friend rather than as a political transaction.
Trump: “It’s Totally Allowed”
Asked about the arrangement at the White House, President Trump defended his son.
“It’s totally allowed,” Trump told reporters, adding that people commonly host wedding parties for friends.
Trump also said he understood that his son had either repaid Kremlev or intended to do so.
The president described a previous conversation in which he said he questioned his son about the arrangement and Trump Jr. told him he was paying Kremlev back.
Trump did not provide details about the repayment, including how much money was involved, when repayment occurred or whether the entire value of Kremlev’s contribution was being reimbursed.
The president also said he had personally hosted wedding parties for other people and portrayed Kremlev’s involvement as an example of that type of personal generosity.
Who Is Umar Kremlev?
Kremlev’s relationship with the Russian government has helped draw political attention to what otherwise might have remained a private wedding celebration.
He leads the International Boxing Association and has publicly associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kremlev was also awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship and accompanied Putin during a trip to China as part of a Russian delegation, according to reporting cited by the Associated Press.
Those connections have generated scrutiny because Donald Trump Jr. is not simply the son of a sitting president. He is also a prominent political figure and businessman with significant influence within his father’s political movement.
The episode also comes while Russia remains at war with Ukraine and the Trump administration continues to deal directly with Moscow over the conflict.
The Couple Rejects Political Motives
Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have pushed back against suggestions that Kremlev’s involvement should automatically be viewed as evidence of political influence.
In their public response, they said friendship should not automatically be interpreted as political and that generosity does not necessarily carry an ulterior motive.
Their explanation draws a distinction between the wedding itself and the festivities that followed it.
According to the couple, they married privately with family before attending what had originally been planned as a weekend gathering with friends. Kremlev then hosted two nights of celebration as a wedding gift.
No publicly disclosed evidence cited in the Associated Press reporting establishes that Kremlev’s spending was provided in exchange for an official action or political favor.
Questions Remain About the Money
President Trump’s statement that his son was repaying Kremlev potentially changes an important aspect of the story, but it also leaves unanswered questions.
The president did not specify the amount being repaid, whether repayment had already been completed, or provide documentation supporting the claim.
That distinction matters because a gift worth hundreds of thousands of dollars is fundamentally different from expenses that are ultimately reimbursed.
For now, the public accounts contain both elements: the couple described Kremlev’s hospitality as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift, while President Trump later said his son was paying the Russian businessman back.
Exactly how those two descriptions fit together has not been publicly detailed.
A Personal Celebration With Political Scrutiny
The controversy illustrates the unusual overlap between the Trump family’s private relationships, international business connections and President Trump’s public office.
Kremlev’s involvement does not by itself establish improper political influence. At the same time, his documented relationship with Putin and the reported scale of his financial contribution have prompted questions about why a foreign businessman closely associated with the Russian president was willing to spend such a substantial amount on celebrations for the American president’s son.
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife say the explanation is straightforward: Kremlev is their friend.
President Trump has offered another important piece of the explanation: whatever Kremlev initially paid, he says his son is paying him back.
Whether additional details about those payments become public remains to be seen.
