Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the state's top law enforcement official and Donald Trump's handpicked Republican Senate candidate, is facing another explosive controversy after a new investigation revealed that he celebrated New Year's Eve in Dubai alongside two American businessmen facing federal criminal charges.

The gathering also included a woman identified as Paxton's girlfriend, despite his being married at the time.

According to an investigation published by The Wall Street Journal, Paxton attended a lavish December 31, 2024, celebration overlooking Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper. Video reviewed by the newspaper reportedly shows Paxton and Tracy Duhon watching fireworks from a luxury high-rise balcony.

But the most troubling detail was the company he kept.

The Attorney General and the Federal Fugitives

Among those attending the celebration were Anosh Ahmed and Sameer Suhail, two American businessmen who had been indicted months earlier on federal healthcare fraud charges.

Both men had failed to return to the United States to face the charges.

Ahmed was not simply another guest at the party. Campaign finance records cited by The Wall Street Journal show that he had contributed approximately $190,000 to Paxton's political campaigns.

Even more remarkably, $25,000 of those contributions reportedly arrived just days after Ahmed was indicted.

The allegations against the businessmen remain allegations, and their presence at the gathering does not establish that Paxton participated in criminal wrongdoing.

Nevertheless, the circumstances raise an extraordinary ethical question: Why was Texas' chief law enforcement officer celebrating overseas with individuals who were avoiding federal prosecution, including a substantial political donor?

A Luxury Lifestyle Under Increasing Scrutiny

The Dubai revelation follows separate investigations into Paxton's extensive travel and the public money spent protecting him.

An investigation by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune found that Paxton had taken nearly 1,000 trips during his tenure, with taxpayer-funded security expenses totaling approximately $3.3 million.

Investigators could connect only 138 of those trips, accounting for approximately $553,000 in security costs, to documented state business.

Another Associated Press investigation examined Paxton's frequent trips to luxury destinations, including California wine country, Caribbean resorts and European vacation spots.

The reports raise questions about how Paxton has balanced his public responsibilities with his extensive travel and increasingly wealthy lifestyle.

Trump Was Warned About Paxton

The political implications extend directly to President Donald Trump.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump was warned earlier this year that additional damaging information about Paxton could emerge if he endorsed the attorney general over incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn.

Trump reportedly dismissed those concerns, expressing confidence that damaging information would emerge about Democratic candidate James Talarico instead.

Trump endorsed Paxton anyway, helping him defeat Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff.

That decision now threatens to become one of the Republican Party's most consequential political gambles of the 2026 midterm elections.

Another Scandal in a Long Political Career

Paxton is no stranger to controversy.

In 2023, the Republican-controlled Texas House impeached him on allegations involving bribery, abuse of office and misconduct. The Texas Senate subsequently acquitted him.

He has also faced securities fraud allegations, which were ultimately resolved without a criminal conviction.

His personal life has attracted additional scrutiny after his wife, Texas state Senator Angela Paxton, filed for divorce citing adultery.

Paxton has denied wrongdoing in previous legal controversies, and an impeachment acquittal is not a finding of criminal guilt.

Still, the accumulation of controversies presents a striking contrast with the law-and-order image that Paxton and his political allies promote.

Could This Cost Republicans Texas?

Paxton is now facing Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched Senate election scheduled for November 3.

Recent polling has shown Talarico holding narrow leads, raising the possibility that Democrats could win a statewide Texas election for the first time since 1994.

For Republicans, the concern is no longer simply whether Paxton can survive another scandal. It is whether Trump's decision to elevate him could jeopardize a Senate seat the party has long considered secure.

The latest revelations leave voters with serious questions about Paxton's judgment, his relationships with wealthy political donors and the standards expected of someone entrusted with enforcing the law.

The central issue is not whether attending a party is illegal. It is whether a state attorney general should be socializing with federal fugitives while accepting substantial campaign contributions from one of them.

And for Donald Trump, the question is equally uncomfortable: When warned about the baggage surrounding his preferred candidate, why did he choose to ignore it?

The Dubai gathering may have lasted only one night. Its political consequences could extend all the way to Election Day.
