Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is facing widespread condemnation after suggesting that Dr. Anthony Fauci and FBI Director Christopher Wray should be beheaded, with their heads displayed outside the White House as a warning to government officials.

The remarks, made Thursday during Bannon's online program War Room: Pandemic, have prompted Twitter to permanently suspend the show's account, while Facebook and YouTube have removed videos containing his statements.

The controversy comes as President Donald Trump continues challenging presidential election results while votes are still being counted across several battleground states.

Bannon Calls for Executions

During Thursday's broadcast, Bannon discussed what he believes Trump should do if he secures a second presidential term.

He initially suggested firing Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, and Wray, who heads the FBI.

Bannon then proposed going considerably further.

Referencing executions in Tudor England, he suggested displaying their severed heads outside the White House to intimidate federal employees who resist Trump's agenda.

His co-host, Jack Maxey, subsequently referenced the execution of suspected British loyalists during the American Revolution.

Bannon responded by discussing the violent nature of the Revolutionary War.

The exchange has generated criticism over the use of violent imagery against two sitting federal officials.

Social Media Companies Respond

Twitter confirmed Thursday that it permanently suspended the account associated with Bannon's program for violating its rules against glorifying violence.

YouTube removed the offending video for violating its policy against incitement, although the program's channel remains available.

Facebook also removed videos containing the remarks after determining that they violated its policies concerning violence and incitement.

The episode reportedly accumulated nearly 200,000 Facebook views before its removal.

Spotify has also removed the episode, while Mailchimp has closed an account associated with Bannon's operation.

The actions highlight growing pressure on technology companies to address violent rhetoric and misinformation during the disputed presidential election.

Fauci and Wray Already Face Trump Criticism

Both officials have been frequent targets of criticism from Trump and his political allies.

Fauci has repeatedly contradicted the president's optimistic statements about the coronavirus pandemic, warning Americans about rising infections and the importance of public health precautions.

Trump recently entertained supporters' demands to fire Fauci during a campaign rally.

Wray has also faced criticism from the president, particularly concerning the FBI's handling of politically sensitive investigations.

Neither disagreement provides a legal or ethical justification for threatening violence against public officials.

Bannon Faces Additional Legal Troubles

The controversy arrives while Bannon is already confronting federal criminal charges.

In August, prosecutors charged him in connection with an alleged scheme involving donations collected for a privately funded border wall.

Prosecutors accuse Bannon and several associates of misleading donors about how contributions would be used.

Bannon has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations remain unresolved.

On Friday, attorney William Burck filed paperwork seeking to withdraw from representing Bannon in that case. No reason for the decision has been publicly established.

Political Tensions Continue Rising

Bannon's comments come amid increasing concern about confrontational political rhetoric surrounding the presidential election.

Trump continues alleging widespread election fraud without presenting evidence sufficient to substantiate those claims.

Facebook has separately removed a large pro-Trump group called Stop the Steal after identifying troubling calls for violence among its members.

The Anti-Defamation League has condemned Bannon's remarks, warning against threats directed at government officials.

As election workers continue counting ballots, the controversy raises questions about the responsibilities of influential political figures whose statements reach large audiences.

For now, Bannon faces mounting criticism and restrictions from major technology platforms, while the country awaits the outcome of an increasingly contentious presidential election.
