Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was brutally attacked with a hammer inside the couple's San Francisco home early Friday by an intruder reportedly searching for the Democratic leader.
The attack comes after years of political hostility directed at Nancy Pelosi, including repeated personal attacks by former President Donald Trump and threats against her during the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.
"Where Is Nancy?"
According to law enforcement sources, the intruder repeatedly demanded to know where Nancy Pelosi was before attacking her husband.
The words echoed the January 6 Capitol riot, when supporters of Donald Trump searched the building for Pelosi while attempting to disrupt certification of Joe Biden's presidential victory.
Trump has spent years portraying Pelosi as a political enemy, frequently referring to her as "Crazy Nancy" and attacking her during rallies and public appearances.
Although investigators have not established whether Trump's rhetoric influenced Friday's attacker, the similarities have renewed concerns about threats directed at political figures.
Pelosi Suffers Serious Injuries
Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old David DePape.
Officers responding to the home around 2:27 a.m. encountered DePape and Paul Pelosi struggling over a hammer. According to police, DePape seized the weapon and struck Pelosi before officers subdued him.
Pelosi underwent surgery for a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. His doctors expect him to recover.
Nancy Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack.
Political Violence Raises Alarm
The assault comes just 11 days before the midterm elections and amid growing concerns about threats against elected officials.
U.S. Capitol Police investigated 9,625 threats and concerning statements directed at members of Congress in 2021, compared with 3,939 in 2017.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack Friday, connecting it to the political violence witnessed during the January 6 insurrection.
The attack raises a troubling question about America's increasingly hostile political environment: When public officials are repeatedly portrayed as enemies, how can the country prevent political grievances from turning into violence?
For the Pelosi family, those concerns have become painfully personal.
